What's a Bandsaw Box?

Bandsaw boxes are created from a solid “layered block” of
wood, that has been formed by gluing several thicknesses of
solid wood together face-to-face. Rather than use a solid
chunk of wood, the “layered block” is created to avoid
twisting (warping) and checking (cracks) that can occur with a
solid chunk. The drawers are cut out of this block like tunnels
in the side of a mountain. Each drawer is then carved out and
put back into its own tunnel. The entire piece is then hand-
finished, starting with many many hours of hand sanding,
several applications (at least 3) of hardshell finish coats, with
hand sanding of the entire box and drawers between each
coat. The insides are left unfinished. This is to allow the
wood to breathe and the wonderful fragrance to be emitted
by the wood. No matter how long you keep this box, when you
open a drawer you will smell the natural scent of the wood.
Finally, each box is signed, dated, and the wood species
noted on a drawer back.

Everything we make is handcrafted by me in a small studio
woodshop located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The designs
are a collaborative effort between my wife, my daughter and
me. Each design is created on a computer in AutoCAD and
then printed out to full scale before any wood is cut. The
wood is then carefully selected to complement the design. The
species and grain of the wood is considered for each
individual work of art. We can accommodate custom designs
too, if you have something special in mind. Just send us your
idea or ideas, and we can combine them in an AutoCAD
drawing. Then we would email or send you a printout, so you
can see it in full size, before we begin. If it’s a particular
wood species that you like, we can accommodate that too.

These boxes are meant to be treated as heirlooms, and
certainly will outlast many generations yet to come.
